Thessalonians
After seeing a vision of a Macedonian man urging him to, ” Come over to Macedonia and help us (Acts 16:9),” Paul embarked on a journey to that region with Silas and Timothy. They first traveled to Philippi (Acts 16:11-40) before going to Thessalonica. Paul preached there briefly and was able to establish a church. Unfortunately, he was forced to leave town. In his concern for the young church, Paul had Timothy check and report on how the Thessalonians were doing. Timothy reported that while their faith was strong, they were being persecuted and had questions Paul needed to address.
1 Thessalonians is one of the earliest of Paul’s letters, with 2 Thessalonians written a short time later. Both offer encouragement, provide instruction and answer questions raised by the young church. The focus of the questions was often, “How can I be sure?” We often ask this the same question today with respect to our own faith issues.
