UCI Orchestra Tour

The Concordia Symphony Orchestra, from Concordia University Irvine, will be making an appearance at St. John Lutheran church in Cypress, TX under the baton of Dr. Jeff Held.  The CSO plays music of the professional orchestra repertoire, tailored for excellent church acoustics.  On the tour, the orchestra will feature Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 3 “Espansiva,” a tour de force of modern symphonic repertoire,  Student violinists Chi Zhang and Daniel Laguilles, winners of an audition contest, will solo on Vivaldi’s Four Seasons “Autumn.”  The concert, taking its cue from the subtitle of the Nielsen symphony will grow gradually larger and larger.  It opens with a short work for soprano and baroque guitar, performed by student Maria Jose Insuasti.  The music will continue to expand, including a gorgeous work by Eric Whitacre, “October” and one of Giovanni Gabrieli’s signature canzonas for brass.  Following the symphony, our musicians will be supplemented by a local ensemble in a hymn setting of “Splendor and Honor” for 2 orchestras, organ, soprano, and congregation.   Admission to each concert is free.
